Please read all of this section, before proceeding.
This product contains 4 sections from the What PC? magazine's Buyer's
Guide, being Desktop PCs, Word Processors, Spreadsheets and Creative
Graphics & CAD. Additional sections will be added during 1996. The
CD-ROM also contains demonstration versions of What PC? Pages and
Transmedia Pages. What PC? Pages includes a worldwide hotel directory
and offers preferential rates to Psion users booking through its service.
hat PC? book in excess of 1 million room nights per year. Transmedia
Pages contains directories of restaurants in the United Kingdom and in
Australia, which participate in the "Transmedia - The restaurant card"

Complete the form contained in the file apply.txt and return it to

updates, and, for a limited period, also receive 6 months free subscription
to Transmedia's restaurant card. You can copy any permutation of the
supplied databases to your Psion Series 3a, depending on your personal
requirements and the storage space you have available. One copy of
'Pages Viewer' software, requiring approximately 95kb, is required to access
any number of databases. The databases, and their approximate sizes are
summarised below :
Database name Size Code
------------- ---- ----
What PC? - Desktop PCs 67kb wpd
What PC? - Word Processors 11kb wpw
What PC? - Spreadsheets 10kb wps
What PC? - Creative Graphics & CAD 20kb wpc
Expotel Pages - London demonstration 26kb exd
Transmedia Pages - UK demonstration 46Kb tmd
Connect the Psion 3Link serial cable between the PC and your Psion 3a.
On the Psion, from the System screen, use Psion-l to set 'Remote link'
to 'On' and ensure the 'Baud rate' is set correctly.
The installation procedure differs considerably depending on whether you
will use the DOS based RCOM or MCLINK programs supplied with earlier versions
of the Psion Serial Link, or whether you use Windows based PsiWin.
Go to SECTION 1, if you will use MCLINK or RCOM,
or
Go to SECTION 2, if you will use PsiWin (or are a MAC user)
1) Installation procedure (Using RCOM or MCLINK)
-------------------------------------------------
On the PC, start RCOM or MCLINK. If you are installing What PC? Pages from a
diskette, simply insert the diskette into your PC's diskette drive. If you
are installing What PC? Pages from the hard disk of a PC, you should have
selected the base directory you copied all the files into. You can easily
identify this directory, as it will contain this 'readme.1st' file and the
file 'pages.ini'.
Upgrading from an earlier software revision - Delete the file
\app\pages\mp_pages.opo on your Psion. Then continue with the next step.
Copying the software - Copy the file pagesmgr.opa from your PC to any \app
directory on your Psion and use Psion-i on the Psion to install the PAGESmgr
program. Enter PAGESmgr on the Psion., answer a few simple questions, and the
software will be copied to the Psion.
Copying the database(s) - PAGESmgr will ask you if you want to load a
database from the PC. Answering "Y" (for YES) will present you with a menu
of databases available on the PC. Select a database, answer a few simple
questions, and the database will be copied to the Psion. You can repeat this
step for every databases you want to download. You can repeat it at any time
in the future, by simply entering PAGESmgr and selecting the appropriate
option.
Exit PAGESmgr and use Psion-i to install PAGESi.opa on your Psion. The
PAGESi icon will then appear on the screen. Pressing 'Enter' on the PAGESi
icon will take you into 'What PC? Pages', allowing you to access, search and
view the databases you have just downloaded.
You will see that with the software now fully loaded, if you re-enter
PAGESmgr, you will be presented with a new menu. You will only need to use
these options if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions
and/or databases. Such advanced use is documented in the file readme.2nd.
2) Installation procedure (Using PsiWin or the MAC's Psion Link)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This procedure assumes you know how to use standard Windows "drag & drop" techniques.
As you do NOT want to convert files during copying, ensure PsiManager has
conversion disabled. You can check this in PsiWin's Psion Manager by
selecting "conversions" from the "setup" menu and ensuring the "allow convert
on Drag & Drop" box is clear, ie not selected.
Copying the software - Manually create the \app\pages directory on your
Psion, if it doesn't exist. Copy the 2 files in the \app directory to a \app
directory on any device on your Psion 3a and then copy all files in the
\app\pages directory that start with the 3 characters 'mp_' and all files
that start with the 3 characters 'wp&', 'ex&' and 'tm&', to a \app\pages
directory on your Psion.
Copying the database(s) - For each database you want to copy to your Psion,
copy all files beginning with its 3 letter database code, (eg wpd ... see
above) from the \app\pages directory on the diskette, to a \app\pages
directory on any device on your Psion.
Installing the software & database(s) - Use Psion-i to install the PAGESmgr
and PAGESi icons on the System screen. Enter PAGESmgr and select 'Database
Install/Remove'. Having selected the Install button, for each database you
copied to your Psion, enter the 3 letter database code (e.g.: wpd) to make
the databases active. Exit PAGESmgr. You will only need to use PAGESmgr
again if, in the future, you want to download new software revisions and/or
databases. Such advanced use is documented in the file 'readme.2nd'.
Press 'Enter' on the PAGESi icon, which will take you into 'What PC? Pages',
allowing to access, search and view the databases you have just downloaded.

5. Other
-----
a. The software supplied on this CD-ROM is the latest version available
and supercedes any previous releases.
b. Mobile Pages will always create small parameter files in the directory
m:\app\pages. It will create this directory if it does not exist.
c. The file "pages.ini", stores information about databases held on the
diskette, including their names and storage space requirements. It is
used as a part of the PAGESmgr based installation process described above
and does not need to be copied to the Psion.
d. Contrary to general expectation, very often, searches on the database
will get increasingly faster when you add more menu based search criteria,
ie items that, having been selected, are displayed in the top row of
the search criteria screen. This position is only true when you have
the multiple types option set to ALL, ie all of the selected criteria
must be true. The opposite happens when it is selected to ANY!
